Caribou Hunting
Caribou
is the French-Canadian name for the wild reindeer of North
America. They inhabit the tundra and northern forests of
Alaska, Canada, Greenland, northern Europe and northern
China. A bull caribou will weigh from 250-700 pounds and
stands 4-5 tall.
- The western arctic region of Alaska is home to the Alaska-Yukon
barren ground caribou.
- The Central Canada barren ground caribou are primarily
found in the Northwest Territories.
- The mountain caribou, the largest of all the North American
caribou species inhabits the mountain and valley regions
of the northern Canadian provinces.
- Arctic Islands (Peary) caribou is the smallest of the
various caribou species and inhabits the artic islands
of the Northwest Territories and Boothia Peninsula.
- Woodland caribou are slightly larger and darker than
barren-ground caribou. They are found in forested regions
from Newfoundland to the Northwest Territories and down
through British Columbia into northern Idaho and northeastern
Washington.
