Pheasant Hunting
What do Maine, Texas, Indiana, and California have
in common? Not sure? Okay, here's a clue: One of America's
favorite gamebirds. Yep, pheasants. Not only do those four
states have wild ringnecks, they have enough birds to justify
a hunting season. So do others. According to Joe Duggan
of Pheasants Forever, more than half of the states offer
seasons on pheasants. Granted, some states supplement wild
populations with stocked ringnecks, but contrary to what
many think, there is great pheasant hunting beyond the borders
of Nebraska, Kansas, South Dakota, and Iowa, which collectively
form a kind of Rig Four. In fact, fantastic hunting-public
and private-can be found in states that border them. Places
like Oklahoma, Colorado, and Illinois offer darn good pheasant
hunting for those willing to look for it. Even Minnesota,
better known for its great grouse hunting and impressive
whitetails, has about 1 million ringnecks and gobs of public
land within prime pheasant range. And then there's North
Dakota. Call them the "Forgotten Five" or any
name you wish, but these states (among others) offer first-rate
pheasant hunting.
